What size coop and run?

That sounds like a great way to do things. You will get away with a smaller run and also spread the chickens grazing around. And the chicken fertilizer

I am building my coop out of pallets. I went out today and took three pallets that I got from a local Sherwin Williams...which by the way come with 3/4" ply on top of them and laid all three in a line and that will be my floor. The dimensions of the coop will be 11' X 3'7" which I think will be good for 9 birds. The nesting boxes I will build on the outisde of the coop.

I can't agree more . I built mine thinking I only wanted 4. Well, doesn't work. I picked up 4 others. And am looking at adding 2 more. OMG. Now I have to expand. This time I'm expanding expanding expanding.

We turned an old shed into our coop and attached the run. Then we got more chickens, and added on to the run. Now we are planning on enlarging the run, and adding on to the shed to make room for more chickens.

We renovated an old coop and kept the original size layout, 8' long by 4' wide, 5' tall. We currently have 9 large hens (barred, orpington, welsummer, ameracauna, etc.) and they seem to be quite happy! It also came with 9 nesting boxes so the girls are all accommodated! The original owner said it was an old doll house, and he kept about 20-30 hens in there! Wayyyy too many in my opinion! We'll add our two chicks when they get a bit older, so 11 should be just comfy!

The coop can be 4x4 and they should be happy. I know my chickens wouldn't complain if their rum was as big as possible

. But I would recommend a movable run so the chickens don't kill one patch of grass. Both of my runs are stationary and I'm always wondering if I will ever see grass there again.
