I am getting ready to order the feeder and waterer for my new coop in preparation for moving my chickens outside. I have six standards and four bantam silkies.

I am thinking of ordering this waterer

and this feeder with a cone.

Is a 3 gallon waterer and an 11 lb feeder big enough for this number of chickens? I don't want to take up massive amounts of space with the feeder and waterer inside the coop unnecessarily but I do want it to be sufficient for the ten.

Does anyone have any negative experiences with the types of feeder and waterer I chose? It's not cheap and I want to be happy with them.

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

In my largest pen, I use a 5 gallon waterer for 9 standard chickens and it lasts a pretty good while, nearly a week (and I wouldn't WANT it to last longer, since that's about when I get to thinking it should be drained and swabbed out

). So I would think that 3-5 gallons would be about right for you.

I am thinking you might want a slightly bigger feeder than that - I don't know exactly how many pounds my feeders hold, but the 9-sussex pen has a feeder made of a plastic trashcan that is probably 12" wide by 24"+ tall, and lasts maybe 5-6 days (ish). From lifting it, I would guess it's somewhere in the 20-25 lb range when full? Of course, the decision partly depends how often you want to be refilling the feeder. But personally I find it very annoying to be having to refill a feeder every 2-3 days - i've got one like that right now that will be upsized as soon as I come across suitable materials

Good luck,

I bought mine from TSC. I have them hanging in my coop. When the girls were little one did fly up and get into the feeder, so I put a plastic plate on top of the feeder with a brick on top to keep it in place and so far none of the chickens have tried to get on it. I tie wrapped a D-ring onto the handle of the waterer, so it would hang better. I have them hanging on chains w/S-hooks. The one on the waterer would slide and the waterer would tip some and water would spill out. No more since I put the D-ring on... The handle on the feeder has an indent so the S-hook stays in place. Also with the s-hooks on chains, as they grew older, I could raise the feeder and waterer to reduce waste as far as the feed goes.

What size feeder do you have for how many chickens? I am just wondering if I am going to need a 22lb feeder for the ten chickens.
