What size should a nest box be for a laying hen

hello everyone i am just getting started but i want to know What size should a nest box be for a laying hen? is there any wood i should not use?

Hi,my nest boxes made from pliwood and 2x4 s each one about 20"x15" and it's working.

Welcome to BYC! A 12x12x12 is just fine for most standard size hens. If you have a larger breed (like Jersey Giant or big Brahma) you may want to make it larger than that by a couple of inches.


Don't use cedar. I'm not sure if using cedar boards would be harmful for them but cedar shavings is, so I'd stay away from it completely myself.
