What size yard?

Hello, I'm looking to start keeping chickens, but I have quite a small backyard. I only want two or three hens but wouldn't want to do it if it would be cruel. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what the minimum amount of land I would need would be for a couple of chickens?

if your chickens are going to be in a coop all the time you need at least 4 sq ft per chicken and if you are going to let them free range they need at least 2 sq ft in the coop and 6-10 sq ft in the yard...more room is always better though
