what sort of housing do ducks need?

Mine have dog houses also. I was able to get both for free. One pair goes in on their own every night, the other pair I have to put in. I make them go in because it's the only way they're safe at night.

I suppose I should add that my doghouses are in a secure pen so I don't shut them in the doghouses unless they're calling for lots of snow. Since they're call ducks I worry they might be buried by blowing snow!

Ah, okay. That makes sense. Wasn't implying that I didn't think you were keeping your ducks safe at night!

Mine are in pens but not secure ones.

I didn't think you were implying anything

It was just when I went back and read my original post I thought I really didn't say they were in a secure pen. Didn't want someone thinking they'd be safe just in a dog house.

I picked up this nice dog house off of Craig's List. The guy bought it for his dog. The dog would not use it. It was originally $149 at PetSmart. I paid $70. The ducks lay in there sometimes. It is in the pasture that contains our barn. The barn has a 9 ft overhang and most of the time, the ducks and geese are under there. I have a plastic dog house that I plan to put out also, but they really never go into it. Or the geese and ducks slip in with the goats in their house.

I thought ducks needed duck food. Do you feed them separetly???

I don't have ducks...yet...but my friend has one who has lived happily with her chickens for years. It eats the same food as the chickens. I don't think they're supposed to, though.

We live in northern Florida We have 11 ducks. They have their own house. It has a slat floor so I can clean it daily. When we first got ducks we didnt put a floor on and something dug under and ate one. Now they are put away in a locked house for their protection. I usually give them some greens and crumble and they run right inside. Of course you have to keep water available too if you feed in the house. Hope this helps. Micki

We were thinking of getting one of those calve huts for new born cows, especially in the wintertime and than putting fencing around it. They look similiar to the goat house that threeboyschicks has except they are more roundish. We are new to ducks as well and get lots of snow in the winter and we have foxes and coyotes roaming around, as well as weasels although we haven't seen any yet.

I lived in central FL up until a few months ago. A friend of mine had some ducks in her pond, and one came up missing. Just like yours, the others were scared to go into the water. She couldn't figure out why, until her husband spotted a 6 ft. gator in it!! I wouldn't go in the water either!! Could be your problem??

This is how my Rouen were. I thought it might be because of the 3 geese I had and they were just following them.. (Geese in freezer now) So guess it's just the Rouens nature.

I have 6 Cayuga ducks which I took to the pond about 6 weeks old (8 wks now) and they jumped in and had a ball while the 2 chickens (Roeun) watched.

Anyway in the last 2 weeks the Rouen finally figured it out after watching the Cayuga..
