I give mine meal worms. I have a bin ( they donāt fly and canāt crawl up the sides) full of wheat bran. I put an egg carton that has been torn in two in a corner( they like it hide under it) and a few carrots or any other vegetable, like a potato, for them to drink ( they donāt need water and that is how they get their moisture) I replace the wheat bran once a year and just throw in a new carrot whenever it is shriveled of close to gone. Try to avoid vegetables with high water content because they will rot the wheat bran. You can get the mealworms off of Amazon and they will continually reproduce. Thatās what I feed my chickens. Very low maintenance. I use a plastic spoon to scoop them out. After the initial cost they are cheaper than the dried mealworms, and healthier too!The special treat my girls get is Mealy worms. Despite the cost and that some are made in China (!) they get some daily. And also picking through our compost/horse manure pile is a plus option they have when free ranging outside of the barn.![]()
We've tried the "dried" ones several times and always end up with living crawling adult form beetles.I tried 'raising' live one's once and they did that! But it's easier to get the freeze dried ones.![]()
You can feed them the adult ones too! You can also just wait until the adults lay eggs and grow them from there. We've tried the "dried" ones several times and always end up with living crawling adult form beetles.
