I have a bypass 2 micron filter on my 2005 Escape, so I just change the main filter every 5,000 miles, top it off and send a sample to Blackstone for analysis. Then, when I get the results, they offer advice on what additives I might need to add to bring the oil back into spec. So far, no additives needed in 178,000 miles; just the fresh topoff oil has been sufficient. Bypass filter and oil change changed every 4th main filter change/20,000 miles.

My son's car, a 2002 Mustang, has a similar system- without the bypass filter. His has a persistent oil leak that dribbles out a quart every 700 miles or so, so he changes the filter every 3000-3500 miles and just keeps the oil topped up.
