Do Not use cedar shaveing in or around ur chickens it is toxic to them and can cause serious respitory problems and alot of times death!!
if u use peppermint and similar oils test it on ur hand first to make sure it doesn't burn skin before u put it on ur bird. i use oils for candles, soaps, candies and such, most oils r uncut and harsh. adding to water would be fine but alot can't have direct skin contact or it will burn.
if u use DE it must be food grade or it will poison ur birds. pool grade has to high a silica content for birds. it is all natural and u can still eat the eggs. u can even put it in their food, sprinkle in bedding, nest boxes and runs. if they eat DE it can help with internal parisites and things.
sevin is a very strong pesticide. u need to wear protective clothing, gloves and face mask when useing it. trust me i'm highly allergic to it. first time i used it i had chemical burns and allergic reaction to it and ended up in the hospital if u use it use with caution. if hubby uses it i wait 14 days to eat eggs and i don't go near them.
i use adams flea and tick spray in a blue bottle if i'm the one doing it. kills anything instantly and neither us or the chickens have a prob with it. it protects for 3mths. i eat the eggs with no probs. if u use this 2 sprays on vent and under each wing also.
baby oil or cooking spray on feet and legs will help also to smother the mites.
hope this helps,
silkie
