Oh good heavens, you know that thought (the reaction to blood) hadn't even occurred to me.

But I know you're right.

I found a goose like that in my last dog attack. She was like that for quite a few minutes as we went searching for all the geese. I thought she was just barely injured and was busy euthanizing the ones that needed it first. Then when I found her, I picked her up... yeah. She was so bright and alive - they don't know. I took a picture of her lovely face, and then had to put her to sleep. You don't get over it. You just get thankful that it's over with.

Lots of hugs. I'm just heartbroken that you had to go through it. No one should.

I just read this thread after searching for "hernia." I"m so sorry about your hen. The vet says ours has a hernia as well, and it looks just like yours, and seems to be getting a bit bigger. She has been acting perfectly happy until this morning, when she was kind of lethargic and less enthusiastic about eating than usual. But then she laid an egg and was back to her usual self. I suspect the hernia is starting to make it harder for the eggs to come down and we may have to put her down soon as well. :-(
