What the heck is this????? What should I do?

Hi all - I went out this morning to feed the chicks and I found this. What is it? Is it a worm or is it parts of intestines? It was a pile of poop, then I pulled it apart to get a better look and still can't tell. Do any of you have an idea. So, what action do I take now?If it is worms, was it the D.E. that I have been giving them? Please help.

usually round worms are white.

gape worms are red, but don't usually show up in droppings..
but nothing's impossible I guess.
I just checked another site and someone had long red worms with one of her hens...
if so..Ivomec used orally..

what kind of DE did you give?
was it FOOD GRADE?

can you take this sample to a vet?
best to make sure before treating.

I did use FOOD GRADE D.E. I also resently put some Apple cider vinegar in their water. To help prevent w/ sour crop. I had read that D.E. was good for internal parasite removal, but I didn't expect this. Has anyone else had these results with D.E. use? I thought it looked like dead worms but I wasn't sure.

My best guess is that it is the result of enteritis (from what exactly would be hard to say as several things can be responsible ) where irritated it will slough off.
I would not depend on DE (particularly if giving internally) to ward off worms (using it as a dust around the coop is good management but giving it internally will do nothing for any active worm infestation and some members have reported negative findings associated with it)... if you have free ranging birds that have never been wormed then worm them (ivomec EPRINEX > use the search function here to read more on that , dosage etc.) > use the "spot-on" method (applying to the skin)
I would offer a good quality live culture yogurt yogurt , free-choice daily and give a good allround supplement like AviaCharge 2000 (available online from McMurry or Strombergs) and ensure a good quality layer feed for the girls and fresh water > keep everything clean and well ventilated (often these are underlying problems)

Ok today I went out and found small white worms in a dropping. They were not dead! They were deffinately moving around. I really didn't want to use any chemicals on the chickens. I am trying to go somewhat organic and natural. I didn't see the worms before I started using the DE. Is it just coincidence or is the DE working at pushing the worms out? Can someone please tell me their expirence with D.E. as a wormer. And can someone please tell me something organic/natural that I can use instead of chemical wormers. I had read something about cheyanne powder. Will that work?

That is intestinal lining that has sloughed off. Something you're giving them might be irritating their intestinal tract, or they could have something else going on.
