I've been housesitting for my neighbors this past week. They have a parrot, a parakeet and feed the other neighbors cats which don't get fed otherwise. She's even had many of the females spayed and rehomed alot of the kittens to get the population to a manageable number. There were 4 approx 4wk old kittens hanging out on the porch, when DS & I went over to feed last night he came screaming that one of the kittens was dead. I went out back & sure enough on the porch behind their grill was a dead kitten. I am stumped as to what the heck would have killed it....it's face was eaten off!

It takes alot to make me gag and I just couldn't deal with this, I've never seen anything like it. I only saw 1 other kitten, I don't know if the rest were hiding or dead. My neighbors were traveling home last night & I called her cell phone & told her to have her hubby (which nothing bothers) clean the porch before she went out back. I apologized & said I just couldn't do it, plus I didn't want my 5yo who adores the kittens to be around it any longer. Any ideas on what this could be? I don't want my hens to be next on the menu!!!

I didn't think a male cat would eat the kittens, I know they'll kill them but I've never seen one eaten before. I actually did mention this to my neighbor when I called her last night but she felt they were too old, my estimation of 4wks may be a bit off too, they could be a couple of weeks older.

That's possible too, this particular colony of cats is overall very inbred & prone to being small and unhealthy looking as well as having lots of eye issues, most of the kittens & even older cats develop eye infections.
