What to Bring to a Chicken Show?

chickens? not yet :

I'm wondering do you have to have a band on a chicken to show them?

Yes. It is a requirement of most shows that the birds have numbered legbands on. They do not have to be wing banded, just have temporary numbered bandets.

Thanks Sumatra.... you have a very complete kit! So far I only have baby wipes, witch hazel in a spray bottle, nylon hose, Q tips (I just thought I'd throw some in...), a toothbrush and vaseline. I'm going to add some rags, nail clippers and a spray bottle with water right now! Are nail clippers for Guinea Pigs OK? I use them to clip my rabbit and dogs nails with and my Guinea Pig when he was alive.

Generally, the only bands required are NPIP bands (those can be either leg or wing bands): at least all across the South. Other numbered bands are for the own/breeder only. I've never seen a Show that was interested in the least in those. NPIP bands must be placed on the bird by a qualified NPIP tester.

Be sure to take a watering cup and water from home. Strange water can cause digestive upsets.

Feed for after judging. A full crop can spoil the outline of your bird, but you don't want to leave him all day without food. I want my bird to have feed from home, not what the show provides which might not be what the bird is used to: again, tummy upsets are possible when you change feed on an already stressed bird.

A cooler full of drinks for yourself and some comfy lawn chairs. Take a bag of pine shavings just in case the show doesn't provide them, or runs out. (OK, you can probably buy drinks there if you are rich).

I take a small padlock and lock the door of my cage. You have to keep track of judging so the cage isn't locked when the judge gets there to judge the bird. I don't want the show bird I worked so hard on to end up in some meth head's stew pot. Theft is rare, but it does happen.

Not sure if this was mentioned (didn't see it and I apologize if it was), but I also bring Oxine to kill bacteria/viruses. I spray the birds before we go, I spray the cages before the birds go in, and I spray the cages and birds before leaving.

It is a requirement of most shows here in the northwest that birds have legbands. The numbered bands are for identification purposes to ensure that the right bird goes home with the right person. Sometimes they can get mixed up.

Around here judges like to see the numbered bands. Most showmanship judges look specifically for the numbered bands, because they consider it to be a part of showing. It is always a good idea to have one anyway if you show a common breed or color variety. Some of those birds can all look the same.
