So sorry for your loss

Definitely get another chicken. Chickens just love the company of others and you one that is left will get very lonely without a pal.

You all are so supportive and helpful.
I will go to chat, check listings in my area, and just will check with hatcheries online. Maybe I'll get 2 hens juvenile if possible, or luck out and find an adult RIR hen near me.
Yes- I only want a hen. They were for eggs and pets.
I know it happens, as you have all empathized.
If anyone hears of anythong , please let me know- and I appreciate the advice coming.

You are all such great people. It really helps.

This is exactly what I would do, and it is the way I always introduce a new hen to the flock. I also toss scrath and treats so that they think they're all eating together. So sorry for your loss. Good luck.

I had the same thing happen. I lost my 14 month old French Marans today....she got sick and died in 24 hours. My original flock almost all grew up to be roos except for Betty, who died today and Wilma, an Easter Egger. I now have 4 RIRS but Betty and Wilma were thick as thieves and always together. They had to roost together and today Wilma stayed near Betty and now looks lost in the yard. Even my dogs and cats were around Betty today, smelling her and watching over her. My little Shih-Tzu Harley is a lover of chickens...we call him Chicken #7! He is also acting strange tonight. Some people think it's silly but animals are intuitive and have strong feelings about things and KNOW!!! Get more chickens.....don't give up. Even with all the trials and tribulations I have been very blessed with my little flock and can't imagine being without them. I'm so sorry for your loss
