Here in eastern Colorado it's already been a little bit below zero. The girl's coop is the back 6' of the barn. The west wall is covered by the horse's hay and the building is uninsulated steel that is draft free. They have access to the great outdoors everyday and they go out if the snow isn't too deep(1/8" inch or less). Just make sure they have plenty of food and clean water. We use a metal water fount with a suitable heater. Egg production has slowed a little eventhough there is a light on in the morning. 10 eggs a day from 18 girls is still plenty and we won't force the issue with them. Give them the basics and you will be surprised at how well they can handle the seasons. Nature gave them the instincts they need, we just need to give them the tools.
