what to do with extra roosters?

We are going on re-enactment of a pioneer a wilderness trek with handcarts in July with a bunch of youth. I'm going to be taking 4 or 5 roos and teach the little darlings how to process chickens.

I hope that someone in the support vehicles that follow us from camp to camp will carry my ice chest so I can soak them in brine before they are roasted.

Try giving them away on craigslist or process them and eat them. You new this would happen when you hatched the eggs. It can be as needless as an unneutered dog.

I have 5 so guess what that means I do with mine? Keep them...

I know most people don't have the luxury of keeping their extras, but I live in a rural area-so the crowing isn't an issue and I have places to keep them.
I'm in the minority in that I am a fan of roosters-I think they serve an important function in the flock(besides fertilization).

Usually it's off to freezer camp. Other uses have been requests for my surplus roosters to use as coyote bait----I didn't inquire too closely for the details. I have tossed the occasional spare roo outside the run for a few days to check if the predation level has deceased any around here----nope, three days is the longest they have lasted.
By the way, even a scrawny or tough roo can be crockpotted down and the meat picked out and combined with beans, rice, or whatever to make burritos which I freeze for microwave quick meal later, visiting kids usually deplete my stockpile.

What a neat idea - to have them mounted and sell them...or just mount your own favorites and keep them. I'm going to look around for a local taxidermist!

ETA: I put roos from our hatches on Craigslist for $7-20 depending on breed. Those that don't sell go to freezer camp - but then, I have no problem doing that.
