2 weeks ago I had a coon attack. 2 hens were killed and one had a big area of skin ripped off her back. She's been in the house and has done very well. I thought her wound was healing, but tonight I realized it was just a big scab. (2x3"). Is this a normal stage of healing? One person told me to remove it, but wouldn't it just interrupt the healing process, and it would form another scab?
Do I just leave it alone?
Thanks for your help.

The scab is a normal part of the healing process. I would apply some antibotic ointment on it to aid in the healing process.

Thanks Opa,
I quit using the ointment about 4 days ago, because it didn't seem to be doing much, but I'll restart it, maybe to keep the scab soft.

Hey Opa, LOVE that avatar !!!

I feel left out.......I don't see any avatars. That might be good though, since I have a very slow dial-up and it would take hours just to load.

Anyhow.....back to the scab. Will it just slowly fall off on its own? I was thinking I could put her back with the others fairly soon, but now that I know its a scab that's coming loose, I'll need to keep her away from the others (and flies) for awhile longer.
Is a scab just a protection for the tissue underneath, while it heals??
I should know the answer to this, but don't. I guess I haven't spent alot of my time thinking about scabs.

The scab will come off on its own. Pulling them off only delays the healing process and further expose the underlying tissue to additional damage or infection.
