What to do with leftovers from slaughter?

The blood and intestines will go in the compost pile. Feet will be saved for stock, livers and gizzards will be saved and frozen for stock/gravy/eating, feathers and heads will probably go waaaaaaay out in the woods.

We love the gizzard, heart and liver at my house. Its a fun treat for the kids- like a little reward for all the hard work of processing. I really wanted to process the feet this year and save them for making stock- but I just didnt have enough time so they got tossed out

Oh well, maybe next year! I throw away the offal and feathers.

1. Blood

2. Gizzard, Heart, Lung...can I feed these to my dogs?

3. Intestines...I'm pretty sure I can't feed this to my dog, so do I just throw it away?

4. Body parts (feet, head)

5. Feathers...trash?

1. Drips on the ground and the resultant coagulated mess is eaten by ants.
2. BBQ and eaten - I guess the dogs will love them (clean the stones out of the gizzard first !)
3. Chopped up fine into noodle soup - I don't like it, but your dogs probably will.
4. (a) Feet, peeled/scraped and deep fried or stewed in soup - my daughters favorite, too good for dogs.
4. (b) Head - thrown into the pond for the fish to eat (catfish).
5. Some left out for wild birds to take away for their nest, mostly put on the garden fire. If you're not quick enough you'll find the other chickens eating them.

Blood, feathers, heads and intestines go into a compost pile with a layer of pine shavings. This is a seperate compost pile from my normal greens pile way out behind the barn. The coyotes and racoons pick it over, but I still gets some compost out of it.

Feet make awesome stock.

Gizzards are cleaned, trimmed of the tough part on the outside, and chopped. Hearts and livers are cut in half. All three are dredged in flour, salt and pepper, and then fried up in butter with a bunch of sliced onions. TASTY.

I heard that feathers are full of protein you can actually put them in your coop for deep litter method. I've seen my birds eating feathers before.

Save the feet and freeze them! I save necks, feet, backs (when I break down a whole chicken), etc and when I get enough I make a batch of stock!

One other thing for livers....if you don't like them, you can dehydrate them and use them for dog treats. The dogs LOVE them!
