I am the chicken sitter. I know little to nothing about chicken care. My landlady went on a trip, she is completely unreachable for the next week.

On the day she left, 3 of the 4 hens were killed (in all likelihood, by a domestic dog).

Since the incident 2 days ago, I've left the survivor in the coop, which has an open air area. She is safe from predators, but obviously she'd rather be out roaming the yard. The yard is normally fences around the perimeter, just a gate was open. I'm still nervous to let her out of the coop though.

I've had several friends offer to take her in and integrate her with their flocks. This seems like a big(gish) decision to make without the farmer, but it seems like the most responsible thing to do. I don't know if any ever keeping just ONE chicken, and I assume this is because they do better in groups.

Please advise . Thank you! 🧡

Don't worry about chicken getting lonely. It will be only a week, and the owner will return. Let them decide what action to take. They may just get a few new chickens,,, and loneliness problem solved.
Keep chicken inside coop .

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome

It’s best not to make decisions about the owners chickens without them being there and agreeing. The hen will be fine for a week. The dog will very likely be back, I wouldn’t let her out of the coop. When the owner gets back you can tell them that you have friends willing to take the chicken if they need it, but don’t make decisions like that without them :)
