You can stop posting any time now. You leave your horses and chickens and goats outside, a dog is no different.

You asked for input. You chain your dog outside and then call it stupid. My goats and chickens are not chained outside.

Next time you ask for opinions make sure you specifiy exactly what you want people to say. Otherwise you are wasting their time.

You know what? I'm not going to argue with you. If I could have her in the house I would, but that is not an option. Your post of "Keep it in the house, and walk it. No more dead chickens." implies that I'm an idiot. The dog has to be outside, and can not be loose. Chaining right now is about the only option I have, other than sending her to the dog warden, where she would certainly be shot. They don't 'euthanize' them there.
So what I need is people to give me ideas on what I can do with her, and maybe a little sympathy?? Not condescending me, like I'm an idiot. If it were as simple as 'keeping her in the house', I wouldn't have the problem.

If you want a kennel. Are you thinking chainlink? Can you put in a floor. Maybe just another panel on the bottom, and fill in with sand. As a kid we kept our dogs on long runs. Rope run between two trees, with a pulley. Good luck.

Imp- And I gotta ask: Did the chicken walk up to the dog?

Put a barrier up to keep the chickens out of your dogs reach. The chicken walked into the dogs territory. Not the dogs fault.
We decided long ago never to tie a dog again. They are our furkids. But we rescued a Husky puppy who killed more than one of my chickens. He is fine when we are out with him but if he has to go out unsupervised...to the trolley he goes. If a chicken is stupid enough to get anywhere close to the trolley...well we don't need any stupid chickens

Why even have a dog if you are not going to keep it in the house?

oh whoa is me!, we have THREE dogs tied outside! *GASP!*

Shelleyd, are your chickens freerange all the time, or in a run and let out?

we have us a chick-killin' cocker spanial, he kills any chicken he can get hold of, sometimes he eats them, sometimes he just gnaws it apart, and leaves the mangled body, we got a small (but big enough to move around in) dog kennel from a friend and we put him in it when we let the chickens out.

he can't get at them then.

Hikerchick, not everyone can have several or ANY dogs inside, maybe you have indoor cats (we have Three indoor cats that two of the dogs WOULD kill if they got ahold of them if the dogs too were inside), one would kill the cats on purpose, the other would simply try to play.

two of our outdoor dogs are pitbull mixes, Winni is 80 pounds, and Sidney wieghs maybe 50ish pounds, they're GUARD dogs, not people trained, but self-trained, Sidney who's just over a year old was an indoor dog from the time he was 6 weeks old until he was 8 months old, the reason he went out is because my wife Becca found out she was pregnant, she got sick for a while, Sidney got bored and started eating walls, yes EATING the walls, he wouldn't house train either, so rather than get rid of him, we had room for him outside.

he is STILL a very much loved member of the family, I do not LIKE dogs, and I personally go out every day and play with him, make sure he's fed, watered ect.

we've got SIX dogs, 3 small ones inside, the BIG dogs would hurt them if they were inside, our house is NOT big enough for all the dogs inside, nor do they all get along, otherwise they WOULD all be inside.

having an outside dog isn't a bad thing.

I do not mean to rant, or hijack shelleyd's post.

Yeah, she would have had to. The dog's chain is about 25', and the chickens don't normally go around her. Something must have scared the hen to make her go by the dog.
I've thought about the 'runners', but most all the trees around here are on the fence line, basically all woods. So it wouldn't be possible to use a runner.

What size kennel would she need? I was looking into welded wire fence, but I would be so afraid that she would climb or dig out.

If your only option is to chain her, why waste people's time asking for other solutions and then blast them because you don't like their suggestions?

Jeesh.

because maybe she wants ideas from people who HAVE tied dogs?

SHelly, what kind of dog?

our cocker has enough room in a 5 x 5 kennel, he usually sleeps all day LOL
