Hello,
Newbie question! I have 3 day old chicks and planning my coop/run for future. The only detail I am not sure of is what do you do with the poop on a daily basis? I understand putting in a compost etc. but our potential future compost is not close the coop so do you store in a 5 gallon bucket in the coop or? I am planning to use sand in my coop and on poop boards. TIA!

We collect and broadcast on portions of grassy areas. Beware.
:oldYou may have to mow more often than you like to mow.

I don't use sand on my droppings board or anything else, it's just a flat piece of plywood. I don't rake it daily either, if I have a lot of chickens and the weather is damp I may need to clean it weekly, with a lower number of chickens and dry weather I sometimes go six weeks. If it ever starts to stink I waited too long. Over the years I've gotten pretty good about that. Not to say I haven't failed at times.

As long as it is dry it should not stink. Storing it in a 5 gallon bucket until you get enough to take to the compost pile should work well. If it gets wet though it will stink. You just need to try something. If it works fine. If it doesn't try something else. No matter how much you plan, some things just don't work out like you expect. Be flexible and you'll be fine.

I do a lot of gardening, so the chicken poop is a good thing for me. I use pine shavings in the coop and pick up droppings each morning. I have a 2 gallon plastic potty commode with a lid and handle outside of the coop for the poop. I just take my large pooper scooper and make my rounds, dump it in the commode/bucket. I empty the commode twice a day; yes, that's 4 gallons of poop and some shavings and sand from the run. I have two compost heaps that face the southern sky. That way they get heat each day, unless it rains. In the Winter I cover with a black plastic to increase the heat, to kill any bugs. The garden supplies my family and the chickens with various vegetables and herbs through out the year. With poop from 9 hens and one rooster, I am able to harvest enough rich compost for my Spring and Winter Garden.

Yes, a covered bucket near the coop will work.

I have one that sits just outside my coop. I scoop from my poop board into a pail, then step outside the coop and dump it all in the covered bucket. Every couple of weeks I haul the bucket over to my compost pile at the back of my property.

Just make sure the bucket has a tight fitting lid or you will get flies and maggots.

I use kitty litter buckets, probably about 3-4 gallons, one of those 7/8ths full is plenty heavy to haul. Only scoop poop off roosts boards, not coop floor(pine shavings) or run(semi-deep litter). Buddy picks them up and dumps them in their compost, we've got 4 buckets we rotate 2 at a time, then rinses the buckets and brings them back.
I've really got it made!!
