what to do with skunk after you catch it

.22 or air rifle is perfectly fine for quick dispatch, but only with correct shot placement to the head. I've had the best success on raccoons by shooting straight down on top of the head, through the brain, which is a very easy shot to do on a trapped animal. Many of us live in cities and there is considerable danger and negligence trying to shoot something at a distance. Not to mention most cities have laws about discharge of a firearm within city limits, many include air rifles. If your round won't stay on your property, you shouldn't be shooting. Without splintering off into the four rules of gun safety any further, CCI makes a "Quiet-22" round that is subsonic. Aguilla makes a .22 that has no powder at all, just the primer. The Aguilla round will work in a pistol, but will get stuck in the barrel of most rifles. The CCI Quiet-22 is just low power enough that it will not cycle the action of a semi-auto (Ruger 10-22 for example), but won't get stuck in a longer rifle barrel. Out of a 26" barreled bolt action, this round is more quiet than a Gamo Whisper air rifle. The shorter the barrel, the louder the report.

not true, an adult human can die instantly from a pellet gun or .22 I dont know where you get the idea it wouldnt be suitable for a pest that rarely reaches over 15 pounds..

I've pumped a raccoon full of pellets in all the wrong places. It just makes them angry and the run away to die somewhere else. Somewhat effective, but not ideal for sure. Same with .22lr. It will easily go through and through and may not even kill them at all depending on shot placement. What jvls1942 may be referring to is that even with a poor body shot with any other larger caliber would leave a wound cavity that doesn't just close back up like with a slower round.

according to the american veterinary medial association drowning is not a humane method and not recommended by my department of conservation. idk if its the same in all states ..

my government makes it that it's illegal to trap a beaver, muskrat, mink or otter with a foot hold unless its set for the animal to drown.

In Missouri, once you get to a certain size level, body grip traps (aka, conibear types) can only be used under water. The water is used to filter out unwanted catches, like dogs and cats. Body grips are instant kill traps. But even those few that are not killed instantly die from drowning.

Speaking of that, a body grip trap is another option for urban dwellers who want to catch and kill a pesky skunk, possum or coon, but can't use a firearm to do it. The trap kills them instantly. Not for the faint of heart and you have to take precautions, but it may be an option for some. Highly effective when you know the travel path / opening the animal is using to get into the coop or structure.

@ChickenRelatedUserName you have to be a competent marksman obviously, not some kid just shooting at an animal thinking any shot is a kill shot, one accidental shot can cause instant death in animals much much larger.

@itsasmallfarm what you speak of is completely different scenario then humane euthanasia of a trapped nuisance animal. you govt probably doesnt allow you to capture an animal then at your leisure go and drown it in some bucket j
