What to do with the baby?

It was not injured at all; it was barely even wet from being carried in the dogs mouth.

Like I said I don't mind feeding it until it can find it's own food but I'm not looking for another pet; I have enough things to take care of as it is.

I would never kill a wild animal unless I planned to eat it or it was threatening the life of one of my family members and I had no other option.

I haven’t gotten hungry enough to eat possum yet and somehow I don’t think 6’4” DH or 6’5” DS have anything to worry about from this possum even if it grows up to be the mother of all possums.

As for the chickens they have a very secure chicken house that is surrounded by an electric fence.

I have heard that they are really dumb....maybe mine are just exceptional!!!

But seriously, they potty trained easily, KNOW their own "bedroom" and will go back to it when they get tired (mine spend too much time awake during the day), can go outside and come to the door when they want back in.....so maybe not brain surgeon brilliant, but far more than I expected.

I know here they have a "Wildlife Rescue" place and they will take possums and all wild animals, baby birds etc that people find and treat them if need be or take care of them until they can be turned back into the wild. If they need special care or have been injured and can't be returned to their habitat, they have volunteers that are licensed to keep them.
Good luck with it and glad you didn't kill it.

I don't believe you can ever take the wild out of a wild animal. I'm sure you can tame it down, but it still had its wild instincts. That is how it should be.

Just let the little guy go. Maybe the mother will find it...and maybe it will go on its merry way. I personally would rehome it far away, but that's just me. I already have skunks, coons, and a hawk's nest in a pine tree in my back yard.

Does a possum even have a predator (besides a car)? Unfortunately, there are just too many of them and not enough places to go.

We are out in the big middle of nowhere, I’m not sure there is a people rescue anywhere near here much less a wild animal rescue. I’ll leave some food out for it but I’m afraid it’s on it’s own.

Oh sure. Possums are tasty morsels for any predator big enough to eat them.

Betty, don't worry too much about the little guy. He was probably already independent from his mom anyway. Thanks for caring enough about him to give him a meal, and don't feel bad about not wanting a long term nursing project!
