What to do with the coop RUN

View attachment 1808016
I have basically the exact same coop and have six almost full grown hens in it. They definitely seem crowded, but so much happier than in the brooder in the garage! Planning to build a 10x6 coop with an attached 10x34 run this week. We have other chicks in brooders and 2 more coming next month. The flock will be 19 birds strong once all the hens are integrated. Planning to give them some free-range time but we're more than a little worried about predators. We were gifted a 13 hen flock earlier this year and *something* ate well :(
Yup that's my original coop too. Sounds like you're on to some good plans. :thumbsup

Love how I asked about black flies and everyone goes after what kind of coop I have ... thanks again for the help and deleting some of the comments- back to square one! If anyone wants to talk about flies please feel free to comment.... that was the question...:th:barnie

Sorry, just compared my coop to try and defuse some of the negativity that seemed to envelope this thread. This is my first year with chickens and I only have six that are actually outside in a coop now so flies haven't been an issue yet. I am certain they will be, and look forward to hearing what some of the more experienced chicken keepers have to say on the subject :) Hmmm Chicken keepers? Poultry ranchers? Flockers? What is the correct term anyway? ;)

It’s fine. Prior to your post I got ridiculed about my coop. It was my first post and I was mocked. All I asked for was help with flies and what to put on the ground of the run. I was happy about my chickens and after reading several posts that were deleted on how I’m doing everything wrong really discourages me, made me angry and still have only 1 suggestion on flies. I went from a happy chicken farmer to reading these posts of people with nothing better to do than be condescending. My profile picture has my chickens free ranging and I got comments on how I shouldn't keep my chickens in THAT coop. Oh well.... not to happy anymore... ho hum... still have flies...

Yeah, +1 on being discouraged by the coop-shaming. A lot of us are just getting started and having a blast. No need to take the wind out of our sails. I have my long term aspirations but for now my (modified) pre-fab coop is home to 7 very happy girls and they spend dawn to dusk in the side yard, so only sleeping in the (larger than normal, jeez I still feel like I need to defend it) pre-fab.
Can you imagine if parents on a parenting forum were being shamed for not having at least 1000/sqft per family member so everyone has lots of room? Or else they are bad parents and shouldn't have children at all?
ALL of our chickens are much better off than commercial chickens that is for sure.

Flies are just a part of summer, no matter what. I control them around my premises with these home made traps. I keep about 5 or 6 in different locations. These do capture a LOT of flies. I routinely clean out traps and reset. I do need to re-bait .

I get these from store for $5 each. They are baited and disposable. That is where I get the one way tops for my traps.

Thanks for the support. I appreciate it!
