I just found one of Cocoa's egg and I am not sure what to do with it.

My hubby wanted to let her hatch them since they are fertile. But I don't know if she will right now. She has layed 4 total but the other three were eaten by my dogs.

The other three were layed in her little nest and this one I just found was layed just in one of my flower beds nothing special. So should I just assume that she isn't going to go broody on them or is it to soon to tell. Should I just put this egg in the fridge and eat it (which I am SO excited to do) or put it back out in her nest. I put a little fence around the nest so the dogs can't get in there and the ducks still can.

Any advise?? How long can I keep the eggs before they need to be incubated adn where do I keep them if I want to try to incubate them?

If she isnt sitting on eggs, she isnt broody. You will know when she is. (she will sit on the egg and not get off). Do you have an incubator? If so, i would try to hatch at least 4 or 5 eggs so that the chicks that hatch will have company. Eggs will not start to develop until they have been incubated. You can save eggs and then put them in the incubator when you have the number you want. Eggs can sit out at room temperature for 5-7 days before they have to be put into the incubator. If she does go broody, just isolate her from other hens and let her have acces to food and water. Good Luck. What breed is Cocoa?

barred-rocks-rock: I have no clue what breed/breeds Cocoa is just the best guesses from fellow BYC'ers. So I shouldn't put them in the fridge then if we want to incubate them. If we don't want to hatch them then put them in the fridge. Right.

I thought that if they were going to go broody then she would be laying an egg a day and not getting off of her nest. Like you said. My hubby thinks that she will lay a cluch of eggs then set on them.

Oh Ok. Im being stupid. I diidnt see that she was a duck. If she lays a clutch of eggs, she has a 99.9% chance of Going broody. Go for it!
