What to do with too many roos

Quote:
Don't count on ending up with an even number of pullets and roos. Out of 37 chicks I hatched out of my BLRWs last fall I've got about 5 pullets. So much for the old wives tale that you hatch more pullets by hatching in the fall! Those 50/50 averages are based on hatching hundreds of chicks.

How long you need to keep the cockerals depends on how picky you are about what you want for your roosters. If you're not breeding to the standard then you can let go of some sooner rather than later. Some breeds don't fully mature until they're well over a year old. At 12 weeks you aren't going to be able tell a lot about how they're going to be as adults. I cull out anyone who has the wrong type comb or other obvious flaws early on but the potential keepers I generally keep until they're at least 9 months if not longer.

I sell my excess roos at my local poultry auction.

My family will not eat our roos-I try CL all Summer-I had to butcher quit a few this year

As Katy said I had 36 BLRW chicks that grew into 28 roos!!!! I kept the best one-he's awesome the rest I gave away because No one around me wanted roos. This year I will grow out a ton of whatever I get to compare and only keep the best-the rest will be butchered and chopped up so the family does not see whole chickens in the freezer. This way I can make tons of things with the meat!!

Ill do that as long as I can get away with it!

You're a smart woman!!! Way to make it work!

haha thank you!! your gotta do what you gotta do-it killed me watching all those roos leave knowing how much $ I sunk into them let alone the time to grow them out!!! Not this year-But I have to do it on a day both girls aren't home and Dh is working. shoot.... Ill take a day off of work to be alone all day to do it. I had 30+ roo's I gave away or sold for next to nothing. Problem is I cant wait too long when they start crowing I have to do the deed as I have neighbors that love my hobby not the noise and I have a small cabin right next to my house we rent out throughout the summer-they pay for peace-I have to respect that:)

I raise bantams as pets and I do not want my birds to go anywhere where they will be eaten, so these are the solutions I use:

1. I don't hatch large amounts of birds. The maximum amount I generally hatch is 24 shipped eggs or so. I figure if I get 12 out of that and get 6 hens and 6 roosters, that's not too bad. I only hatch a few times a year at most, and that is only if I have room for ALL of the birds I hatch regardless of gender.

2. When I can, I buy adult or started birds. That way I can get only what I want.

3. I keep extra boys in a bachelor pen until they find homes.

4. I put them on Craigslist, advertised for showing or pets. I also put ads up at local feed stores and I plan on contacting the local 4H office about the roosters I have available.

I realize my system doesn't work for everyone, but that is how I go about ensuring I don't have a ton of extra roosters and that the ones I have either find homes or at least have a comfortable place to live on my property.

You're absolutely right about the money that you sink into those birds to "give" them away. I thought about that as well. I can't imagine fattening up my birds to give them away for free. The rooster that I cooked was enough to feed 5 - 6 people. I think I got my money's worth.

You process the roosters yourself??????
