What to do?

My duckling pipped last night but has made no progress since. It has been 18 hours. What to do?

They can take up to 72 hours after first pip to zip, nothing uncommon, ducks are very slow hatchers.

Well, it was really having a hard time and stopped hitting the egg so we helped it a little, very carefully. It seemed like the duckling was shrink-wrapped, and it was bleeding, so we researched very carefully and we have decided to let it be until tomorrow. We have been dabbing the duckling with a wet q-tip and also feeding it small amounts of water. This seems to give it more strength, along with just talking to it. We are also continuing to spray it. We think that it was just not quite ready; It is breathing well, peeping a little, and all we can do now is wait, right?

I would be careful about spraying or using water. It can get chilled very easily. Can you see the bill? Is it making a chewing motion? If so it is still absorbing the yolk. You were right to stop as soon as you saw blood.

Don't give it any water! They aspirate and die. It doesn't need any water. They can live off of just their yolk for 2-3 days. Put coconut oil on the membrane and leave it be

Do you have any coconut oil? That'd be way better, then water, what is your humidity at?

I use food grade mineral oil like for cutting boards of laxative if you don't have coconut oil.

Never thought of using that, I might just use that next time.

Neosporin without pain relief will work too.

I like the idea better than coconut. I feel like coconut oil might have sugar in it to breed bacteria, but lots of folks here swear by it.
