This looks like a stalled zip to me. I'm not 100% certain that it is but the hole looks larger than an external pip.

Has the membrane turned brown and dry looking? If he is shrink wrapped, he'll be unable to zip properly. Just in case @MGG is unavailable, I'll tag someone that I know is on right now @kikk and can advise.
