What to feed chickens to lay more eggs.

Oh phew - I was confused. :)

Turning the light on early just causes my girls to get noisy, so I keep the light on late instead.

Now that we're getting springish weather, my girls are laying more. They also have largely grown back feathers they started moulting in the fall, so now they have more protein available for eggs. Also - what kind of chickens? My Leghorn is a *champ* - six eggs a week. The Orpingtons are fun to watch but less productive.

i'm geting Lohmann Brown's next week and wondered if anyone new if they are hard to take care of? ( i have never had chickens before)

Hey newbie here. Just wondering what little things I could do throughout the day to help my chickens lay some more eggs, and thats' reasonable. Thanks for any responses! Any help is better than what I'm doing now!

You don't say whether you have added a light with a timer. This is crucial, I believe, in the Winter. I put a small 40watt starting 6:30am to 8pm and it made all the difference.

I feed mine 16% layer pellets but they also love fresh blueberries. They probably don't lay more eggs because of an occasional blueberry treat but they jump up and down for joy when I give them to them, and a happy chicken will be a better layer!

I too am a newbie. I have 7 Isa Brown hens, got them at 20 weeks of age last August. It took them awhile to start laying but once they started it has been 100% daily. I feed them the layer pellets and in the afternoon they get chopped up leftovers from the kitchen (carrots, salad leaves, fruit), whatever peelings I have. Even with the cold winter we are having in Central Ontario they don't seem to be bothered. They are happy girls and I am a happy momma hen!

i am also in Ontario and i haven't gotten my chickens yet but i'm geting Lomann browns and hopfully rhode island reds and 1 or 2 cochins, ( we like the look of the cochins fluffy feet!!

) would these breeds be okay together?

I don't know if it helps or not but I have 37 hens & 1 Meat Head rooster, they are free range. When it's cold I have 2 - 250 watt red brood lights in the coop, 1 is on all day and both burn at night. If it is very cold or deep snow, they don't leave the coop. They love popped popcorn, won't eat the kernels though and they love meal worms. If they are 300yds from the house and see my wife coming up the road, they almost fly to the house, she's the one that feeds them meal worms and we get 34 to 36 eggs a day from 37 hens. Even on the days it was below 10 degrees.
