What to Feed, What to Feed...

Chris, What do you use?

Right know I'm feeding,

Chicks up to 6 weeks of age -- Turkey Starter (30%),

Growing Birds from 6 weeks of age to Laying -- 50.5% Five Grain Scratch 40.5% Turkey Starter (it's about a 16% feed)
Laying Hens -- 50% Five Grain Scratch, 40% Turkey Starter (non-medicated) and 10% Alfalfa Meal (it's about a 16% feed)
Breeders -- 50.5% Turkey Starter, 30.5% Five Grain Scratch and 10% Alfalfa Meal (it's about a 19% feed)

Layers and Breeders have a mixture of Calcium Carbonate and Oyster Shells available to them.

Breeders get there feed topped with Instant Dry Milk and a little Cod Liver Oil for added Vitamin A, D, B2 (Riboflavin) and Fatty Acids for improved egg production and hatch-ability.

The Turkey Starter I am using on the chicks, growing birds and breeders is Honor Show Chow put out by Purina.
This feed contains Animal Fat and Fish Meal but also contains Amprolium and BMD.

I'm not a fan of the Purina Start and Grow, Flock Raiser, or Layena to me there junk feeds but
if you get there show line of feed and from what I can see so far it isn't a bad feed.
Now only time will tell what I think about it after this season.
I will forewarn you that the Turkey starter is not cheep. I pay right around 20.00 for a 50 lb bag but
it has Animal Fat and Proteins, BMD and is a 30% protein.
Also keep in mind that I am feed exhibition stock.

Yeah I know....amazon or the manufacturer of Scratch & Peck feed does charge an arm and a leg for shipping & handling. I wouldn't want that kind of money myself.... Somewhere in this forum, I think I read there are others who actually mix organic feed layers at home....

I wouldn't say that it is the "experienced" poultry people. None of the experienced breeders, exhibitors, and handlers I know stay away from soy based feed and I know a lot of them.

What they do stay away from is Vegetarian type feeds. Ones like Purina's Start and Grow, Flock Raiser, Layena.

Interesting Chris....can you tell me why they want to stay away from Vegetarian type feeds? I thought that would be a good choice, naturally? I don't know....I'm still learning a lot about feed... I want to keep my chickens healthy and I think it begins with feeding them the "right/ correct/ appropriate" feeds....Thanks!

Vegetarian feed are "unnatural" chickens a Omnivore and need both animal and plant proteins in there diet to perform at there prime.
Also animal proteins are easier for poultry to digest than plant proteins. Most chicken that are on a vegetarian feed tend to have less than desirable feathering.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Do you live in a 4 seasons area of the country? You are rocking my chicken world right now! The reason I am asking is if you modify over the winter. Thanks, Heather

You could call it a 4 season area but it is more like 2 seasons Summer and Winter.

I live in Ohio, and I feed basically the same mix all year round.

Thanks for the compliments on the feeders. I copied the design for the smaller one from somewhere. I'd be glad to give credit to the originator, but I can't remember where I saw it.

As for cleaning, I haven't had need to yet, but the straps on the walls aren't super tight so I can easily get the caps off to fill. I would imagine it wouldn't be to hard to slide the pipe out after the parts are separated. Nothing is cemented together. The very bottom of the feeder is filled with gravel to take up space so not so much food is stuck at the bottom where they can't reach it.

I feel the need to do more feed research. . . .
:)

I would love to have access to these show feeds. What are they called? Are they game bird?
Try these places, there with in your area.
