Ok my chickens are 6 months old. RIR's. We just started them on laying mash and are also feeding them scratch grain. each food is in a different container. I also give them oyster shells. and treats. is this what i am supposed to be feeding them? thanks

layer Pellets are better than mash for 6 month old. Don't feed too much corn, give it to them just for something to scratch.

Quote:I would agree with this. Typically, chickens will eat scratch and ignore their layer feed if both are offered. If that's the case, then they're not getting the proper nutrients for health and egg laying. Or if you're offering both in containers, then I would only offer a bit of scratch so that you KNOW the bulk of their food intake is well balanced.
