hey! I am new to chickens, but I think I am Doing well with them. I have 8 pullets and I usually let them out side of their run once or twice a day to eat some grass. I'm not so sure how old they are but I think they are coming close to laying. Im not sure what to look for. All of my hens are different breeds and they have different body shapes than others (like my Americana vs Golden Laced Wyandotte). I was wondering If you have any information to give me about what I should look for when my chickens are about to start laying. I don't have the nesting boxes fully functional yet but I don't think that they are going to lay for a while. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

For some breeds the comb becomes larger and redder when egg laying is to start. Hens get a lot more noisy when they are laying. I have two hens that will soon be laying after brooding and raising chicks. I'm sure there will be eggs when I go out to give the flock some cold, fresh water. These two were extremely loud this morning and checking out the nest boxes. If your hens are tame they will squat/spread wings to be mounted/mating when you go to pick them up. Only hens that are, or soon will be, laying do that in most cases.
