I'll put the pine shavings on the floor of the coop (with DE), but what do you put in the laying boxes (where they lay their eggs)? Do you use hay or something different from pine shavings so they know the difference?

from Ohio. I use shavings for both the floor and in the boxes.

we used to use straw, but now use pine shavings. We find it is better for us and our chickens I suppose! stays in the nests better and seems cleaner.

I use basic hay in my standard's nesting boxes.I tend to put throw in pine in my bantam's.I used to free range a lot of my bird's and they would nest in crazy places.I found myself puttin tuft's of hay behind feed cans etc. Some bird's wont nest to save your life if it's red carpet lined and will lay egg's in the dirt.If they are penned however they will most likely lay in same area they pretty much wont care if its hay or shaving's.

I use hay. I tried shavings for a bit but I thought they stuck to the shells and I was ha ing to scrape off tiny bits of shavings from the eggs. Plus the girls were kicking he shavings right out of the boxes and it seemed like I needed a ton of shaving to make a nice cushy landing spot for the eggs.
