Question about using shredded paper (junk mail) in the bottom of the brooder?
I have read not to use newspaper because of the print but what about the mostly white paper? Not a problem getting pine shavings but thought might be a good way to use the paper and then out to the garden.
We started off using hay but the girls kept kicking & picking it out of the nesting boxes, scattering it all over the floor of the henhouse. After about 9 months of cleaning this mess up several times a week, we finally on a whim tried using pine shavings instead. They immediately stopped kicking it out and we haven't had any problems since. Not sure what the problem was with the hay but I have no complaints with the shavings.... easier to work with anyway
I use hay & fake eggs. Before they started laying they would investigate the boxes. Now that their laying they use the boxes to lay their eggs & that's it. They rarely even poop in them the eggs are very clean.
