I just finished the coop and I'm getting ready to put the girls in, it has a dirt floor and my question is
should I leave it dirt or put some sod in it before I put the chickens in.

It's staionary so what ever I put stays. They will free range when I'm home. In the back yard.

thanks
looking forward to that first eggggggggg

I use straw and pine shavings on my dirt floor. Some use hay, sand sawdust, shredded paper, Dri-Stall (for horses I think) and various other things. The old folks around here just left the dirt bare.

Cedar is the only no-no I know of.

I put down shavings. I move my coop every couple of months. However, if I can't move it - like now b/c we have had so much rain - then I shovel out the shavings in the nastiest spots - under the roosts, and put down some lime and then some clean shavings.

thanks for the input. straw and shaving seems to be the best .

When they free roam they can nibble on the grass in the yard.
