What to put on coop floor?

what is DE sorry but I don't know what you are talking about.
I have a wood shop so I use sawdust on the floor and I change it as needed I have five hens and one rooster I did have two but I found one dead this morning. I really don't know what killed him he seemed to be very healthy so why he died is a mistery to me. I joined this forum to learn more about raising chicken my grandmother all way had chicken when I was a child but I realy don't know that much about them. I love my chickens so learning more about them is going to be fun!!

pine shavings are all around the coop, except under the roost, they have 60# of sand, which really isnt that much. with 3 chickens, 60# of sand for only 3.09 a bag is perfect. my question about DE was why people really use it. people are saying they use pine shavings, sprinkle some DE in and turn it around. I don't understand, isn't DE for mites?

In our coop (In the raised place where they sleep at night) We put a vinal runner on a slight slant for the floor. We have a trap door on the left side and just open it up and hose it out in the mornings. It takes like 30 seconds to clean it out! Hands down this is the BEST part of our coop!

In the small run we just have mulch. simple. My ladies are almost never in the coop-run we have almost no clean up. Good old fasioned rain water cleans the yard. Unless there hasent been rain and we're having a garden party or something. Then we spot check with the hose.

LisaJean,

We modified our Chicken Barn/Yard by putting it up a frame. For predator proofing, we run a 12" section of 1/2" hardware cloth along the outside (bottom of frame). I used lanscape staples/stakes and homemade stakes from wire clothes hangers to secure the wire to the ground.

Hope this is some help!

I use hay and horse shavings mixed. It's spread a few inches thick. The clean gets added at one end of the coop. The dirty slowly makes its way to the "roost" end of the coop. Then at least when I take the dirty stuff out, its really really dirty.
Too bad the sand needers don't live near me. My backyard is like the beach. The horses sink into it. The horse poop just slowly disappears into it. I have a never ending supply.

I use sand with coastal hay on top in the coop it works great. I change the hay 2 or 3 times a year and the sand once a year. I also have sand under my roosts and just add to it to keep it deep. I scoop it in the mornings like you would a kitty litter box. Plus I sprinkle DE and Stall dry in it to keep it fresh. I did my cleaning today and took everything out and replaced it with new plus took the leaf blower to the cobwebs. It looks so nice and smells great hubby said my chickens are spoiled!
