My geese have a pen that they are in when I can't be there to keep watch over them (the dogs next door like to eat my birds). As of late, it has been a huge muddy mess. There is no grass, as it was a chicken pen before the geese showed up and the ground was scratched to bits. I want to put something in there that will keep the muddy-ness down, and that I can maybe rake their poo up. I was thinking maybe sand? Hopefully the ground will dry up soon, so I can do something, but would like opinions on using sand in their pen while I wait. I'm hoping to have it done before their egg hatches (its on day 24!)

Thanks in advance!

Sand may work as well as pea gravel. I would avoid crushed stone since it can be tough on their feet.

I would use pea gravel. water goes through easily and it can be raked free of poo etc. My pen is Gravel and works great as well.

We reseeded the goose area, then covered it with hay. We have grass coming up now. I know that eventually they'll eat it back down again but for now we have some nice grass coming up. In the summer, we reseed every two weeks.

Pea gravel sounds even better than sand. I was thinking of re-seeding it, but it's just so darn muddy.

Thanks for the suggestions.
