What to put under the roost

Each morning, after I clean the night’s deposits, I “dust” the board with the PDZ. It is then good to go for the rest of the day and then for nighttime. It becomes a barrier, of sorts, for the nightly droppings. Most just roll right into a pile as I scrape, thanks to the dusting of PDZ that goes down prior to the poop.

My birds poop a lot at night and the area under the roosting bars gets very condensed with feces. I clean out the coop weekly and am going to continue to do so but in the interest of cutting down on bacterial build up id like to put something under there that i can empty out daily. Any product suggestions or home made ideas?
Sweet PDZ, it is like a cat litter but very fine it is used in horse stalls. I use a pooper scooper daily just scoop and discard.

Dont judge me its getting cleaned out completely tomorrow but this is the line of feces im dealing with. I like the dog crate idea and the blanket idea. I might be able to find a couple of cheap totes at goodwill to use

No judging that is brave of you to show us that , my chickens never make such a mess..... haha!!

I still think you should attach plastic/tarp to the wall , staple it or screw it on , then attach it under the 2x4 , make two and switch them out . Easy I think ??

Good luck , yes it is shocking to see the poop running down your walls you so lovingly built for those little brats

Thanks. I didn't want because its embarassing:oops:. I wanted to wait until i had the opportunity to clean it. But everyone wanted pics so here we are:confused:. I think the tarp idea is smart. My SO thought about making some pvc into a trough with a heat gun rather than doing bins.

No reason to be embarrassed, we all see it every day.
It's actually refreshing when someone shows a real chicken coop, poop and all, instead of the sterile 'beauty' shown on most blogs and websites.

Is that a weeks worth of poops? Unless you have a fly problem, I wouldn't worry about just scooping that up once a week.

Lots of things you could put under there, might have to try a few until you find what works best for you.

One thing I notice is that what I think is the upper roost(just barely see the end of it?) seems close to the wall. Move it a foot or so away from wall and you'll get less poop on the wall.

Food trays is also a good idea. We would like to get something that is all one piece if possible.
Yes that is a weeks worth of poop. I cleaned it on sunday. We dont have a fly problem or any bug problems and ive never smelled ammonia from the coop at all but i think this is because i clean it regularly.
Yes that is the upper roost. Good idea on moving it. Ill have to do so later today(after i clean it of course!)

Then not sure why you feel you need to do something different,
adding some kind of bin/tray might be more trouble than it's worth,
unless you just can't stand to have poop there.
Also, if your birds are not yet laying, the volume of poops will increase by about 3 fold once they do start laying, so maybe a manure management change is in order.
