Im new to rising chicks, I have 6 eggs in the incubator and was wondering which is best for when the chicks are hatched i.e. a heat mat, heat lamp or an electric hen(brooder)? I was told I could use a heat mat but Im not sure. Thanks Any help would be great

I think heat lamps are the prefered product to use on BYC. If you do a brooder or heat lamp search here you should find lots of info.

for only 6 chicks we use fish aquariums with a ight bulb..

I made a plywood cover and attached the inexpensive bulb holder to it. then to regulate the temp I just open a crack by sliding the cover or raise up the end of the plywood cover . Mount the bulb to one end so the chicks can move away from it if they get too warm..

remember, after a few days you will be cleaning the bedding daily so make it as easy as you can.. that means, no heat pad.. besides if they would get too warm on a heat pad, where could they go to cool off??
