What to use in a dusting box and design ideas?

My birds are digging a good many holes for dusting beds. How can I designate a area just for that and how many do I need for 9 birds? How big and what to put in them?

I have a plastic doghouse. I put the ash from out pellet stove in it. Chickens don't use it for a dust bath, they still make their holes .

I have a big metal tub about half full of sand. The use it about half the time. About as often they dig up a new depression and wallow in it. (Just wait till the ground freezes solid...)

As long as I keep it pretty well filled (I use peat moss, you can also use/mix in plain top soil, sand, some wood ash) they stick to using it when it's available.

I have a small cow foot bath that a farm distributor was throwing out because it had a crack in the bottom. Great for me so that any liquid will drain out.
