My RIR is my rooster's favorite and she's now totally bald and swollen. I took a closer look and feel this morning and the top of her head looks to be full of fluid. Should I give her an antibiotic? Will the feed store have it? What dosage? Thanks so much!

I know there are various opinions on giving antibiotics or not.. i feel that giving when I see it is necessary can save a life versus just taking the wait and see method!
I like to give shots because they get the full dose right away instead of the powdered form in their water.
If you cannot do shots just get a packet of terrimycin (spelled wrong) and mix up a tsp. in a quart of water for her. I wet their feed with it to get more meds into them.....and most importantly give a baby aspirin to reduce the swelling of her head and ease her pain. I just place it in back of mouth and she should swallow it.. good luck and please keep us updated.....

Is there a way I can just treat the one chicken with the powdered antibiotics? I don't have anywhere to keep to separate her. Can I give her a treat laced with it? What would the dosage be for that? I don't want to treat the others because it's not neccessary. Thanks again!

The only way to do that is with an oral antibiotic that you would give as a drench or you could give a shot or you could separate her in a dog kennel in your house and give her the meds in the water. Terri O

Yes you can mix some of the powdered antibiotic into yogurt or something she will eat. Hard to say the exact dosage but I have taken a 1/4 tsp. and mixed in a cup of water and given that several times a day. Just dip her beak in it..
I have also soaked bread in the medicated water and fed it...
Will the rooster continue to pick on her if left in the pen?
