I grew up on a chicken farm and we tried all kinds of things , my stepdad eventually settled on only using rice hulls, I thought they worked great. He wouldnt have ever tried them but we couldnt get our normal litter , it was available and at the time the price was comparable

I switched from pine shavings to sand this fall and for the most part I really like it. I wish I had put more on the coop floor to insulate it a bit more, but I like how easy it is to clean. I mix Sweet PDZ in with it to help with moisture, and that helps too. It's a bit dusty is my only real complaint.

addingsamewon't help the insulation much, sand, of all bedding choices is the worst insulator though I can see where it would be good for cleaning in a small coop with a lower amount of birds

It's nice because when it gets warm it stays warm, but yeah, the same holds true for getting cold. It's great in the run, where it's kind of a green house right now with plastic around it. The sun warms it up and the girls love it. But in the coop I'm still a bit on the fence. I like how clean it is, but would like something warmer. I've considered wood pellets, they're what I use in my rabbit's house, and they're cheap and seem clean.

Dumb question, but what does PDZ stand for?
dont look at me
