Ok I'm kinda new to this and I just want to know what type of chicken is best for beginners.I was thinking of Silkies but I honesty don't know.So please respond thanks.(i'm not a complete idiot on chickens so don't treat me like I know nothing)

It depends what you want them for, meat eggs pets or shows? And also do you want chicks or do you want layers? Also depends on what is available to you I guess, I started with 5 ex battery girls, then got 2 cream legbars and a lavender pekin, then I got a lemon pekin and a wc black polish, im addicted lol and want different brreds, that lay different colour eggs, so I can teach my daughter about food lol

Silkies aren't the best layers and they also go broody a lot so unless you want chicks they are a bad option. You cant go wrong with rescuing battery hens or getting Golden comments/gold line/ginger nut rangers/red sex link/warrens (they have loads of different names depending on breeders) They are friendly and lay loads of large eggs. Another good option would be Rhode island reds. If you would like some that are good with eggs/meat and will raise chicks, Orpingtons and Sussex would be a good option. You could also get a mix of breeds too, they don't all have to be the same but its best to get them from the same place though! Good Luck with what ever you choose!

What type is best for you just depends on what you want them for. Do you colorful eggs, meat chickens, exhibition chickens, Layers, do you eventually want to get into breeding chickens, do you want to show them? Most chickens have good temperments there are some breeds that are known for aggression. Also do you want large fowl or bantams? Brahmas and cochins are usually gentle giants. Silkies are adorable, but go broody alot so if you want chickens for eggs they probably wouldnt be the best choice. Personally I like ameraucanas and Easter Eggers. You can show ameraucanas and they lay very pretty blue eggs, they also have beards and I think chickens with beards are adorable. Easter Eggers you can't show, but they are a basket of suprises, youdon;t know what color eggs they are going to lay until they lay and you could have two identical chicks that could look completley different as adults. You can get on hatchery website and research breeds and look at pictures too.And on BYC you can read people reviewson breeds and their peronal experiences that they have had with the breed. Glad to see more people starting to raise chickens!

Thanks alot

I think it's fun to start with chicks and watch them grow. They won't start laying until they are 6-7 months old.
Ameraucanas and easter eggers are good natured chickens, and beautiful, and they lay blue/green eggs.
