What type of chicken

We were surprised with who some of our chicks turned into. For instance, we were supposedly buying sexed chicks in lots of four. Our four barred rock chicks turned out to be two hens, two roosters. We had to re-home the roosters. Our four silver lace Wyandottes turned out to be one silver lace, one gold lace and two Wellsummers!
Just wondering how all of yours turned out.

It all depends on the chicks. Some breeds are easier to sex than other breeds. Also depends on your source. Please take into consideration that the mixing up could have occurred by common peeps placing/returning chicks into wrong containers. Mislabeling containers??? Also, chicks sometimes fly the coop and employees just return them where THEY THINK they belong.

Well we bought ours at a local farm & feed store.
We bought 10 chicks (all were supposed to be girls):
3 Buff Orpington - 2 girls, 1 boy
2 Silver Laced Wyandottes
5 Easter Eggers
So we were 9/10. The Cockerel was mean so he went away.

My inlaws bought us two Sexlinks so those were a safe bet

All of the other girls we have were purchased as older pullets.

My daughter’s 4-H project chicks:
She was given 2 Bantam Silkies.
1 was a girl & 1 turned out to be a boy. He is sweet as can be so he is staying.
And she purchased a Buff Brahma Pullet. So 2/3 on that one.

I bought my first 6 at my local agway: 1 Dark Brahma, 1 Black Jersey Giant, 2 Light Brahma, 2 Buff Brahma.... All girls and ended up giving away two.
Bought my second batch of 6 from Meyers: 1 each; Speckled Sussex, Buckeye, Barred Rock, EE, Leghorn. All girls; the LH has passed on.
Got the hamburgs from a fellow backyard owner, both girls, but they were older and already sexed.
bought the other EE, Araucana and Barnvelder from a local breeder; all girls.
Then I ended up going back to that breeder and getting a 2 yr old Araucana rooster.

I've been extremely lucky in that all of the chickens I've bought as chicks, intending for girls have all been girls. The last three I wouldn't have minded if the EE or the Araucana was a cockerel. When none of the three ended up being a cockerel, and my breeder was downsizing, I scouped up the roo.

Good! Chicks turning out to be different breeds is better than them turning out to be rooster especially for people that don’t want or can’t have roosters.

I am researching and planning for new chicks next year. Not quite sure exactly what I want yet breed wise but since I am limiting my buying to 6 to 9 chicks I want to be selective. If I end up with extras, roosters or something I don’t want I will likely sell them or give them away.

We've been super lucky to never have a rooster from sexed chicks from either a hatchery or a feed store. However... we are not so lucky when it comes to hatching eggs.

14 hatched, 8 roos, 6 pullets.

This year: 9 hatched and it looks like it'll be 6 roos and 3 pullets. Unfortunately we only have room for 1 additional roo.
