What type of leghorn is this?

I'm just a picture junkie tonight lol

Ideal's Production Blacks (aka California Grays) are quite small and slender, shaped a lot like a Leghorn. At least their picture suggests a very Leghorn type body figure.

Okay, here's a couple of pictures of my actual roo... He's a little scraggly looking... he was part of a dozen or so chickens that we rescued from someone, but he's looking better than he did when we got him. He walks around tall and proud... even though he's not the king rooster of the ones we have.

If he is a California Grey what do I have to breed to get more of them. My husband thought barred rock and white leghorn, but we're not sure if it should be a barred rock rooster or hen... any ideas??

According to Ideal, their Production Blacks (aka California Grays) will breed true. If you want more of him, I would recommend buying some of those pullets from Ideal to breed to him. They're supposed to be awesome white egg layers!

He could be a Barred Leghorn, but those are extremely rare. He also could be a mix of some kind.

Your rooster doesn't look all that pure, I'd rather guess him being a result of some mixing.

It's a California Gray..we have some here. They are not big bodied at all as small and smaller than my white leghorns. They lay frequently but not nearly as large as my white leghorns..a big medium egg by weight but considering they are the size of my bigger bantams...
They do breed true..they are not a sex link now...at one time that cross was made but they are now their own being. If you want more just get some pullets from a hatchery and you will be all set.
You can't use white leghorns for any outcross breeding unless you want white chicks..they are dominant and all fuzzy butts hatch white with some leakage.

Thanks for all the info everyone! May have to consider trying to get some California Grays from a hatchery... most of my hens currently lay brown eggs and I'd like to have some variety.

Thanks!
