What type of moth is this?

Saw this moth on the wall of my house last night; it's just beautiful, but I've never seen one like this in Michigan (or anywhere). I'm sure it's something common, I'd just love to know what it is. OH, it's approx. 3" across and 5" up & down, including the long....tail (?) - pretty big!

I've only ever seen two Luna moths, one was dead in the middle of the road, and the other was helplessly trying to lay eggs on the sidewalk of a gas station, i brought her home and she layed her eggs on a rock I put her on, then she died, then ants came and ate all the eggs
