What type of netting do I get to put over the top of our run? I have a couple of hens that keep getting out of the run.......I cannot afford to lose another girl. I'm going tomorrow to get some.....and was wondering if it mattered what kind I got? We get heavy snow here in Iowa, so I should probabley take that in to account.

Thank you : )

Chicken wire will keep them in but it won't keep predators out. Just keep that in mind. It may not be a problem for you. Good Luck

The run is approx 15 by 50 and it is an L shape. So it makes it kind of difficult, it also butts up to our pole barn.

We went and got chicken wire and put it up on the top - kind of bent in, like a prison fence : ) Hopefully that will work. Not worried about predators during the day.....the coop is like fort knox for at night. Day before yesterday all but one was out wandering the horse pasture and I had to catch the roo........let's just say he may NEVER trust me again....I lured him with bread to get him close to me and then snatched him. Now when he sees me he makes that noise = you know that "a predator is coming" noise. Great.....all the work it took to get him to trust me and it's out the window. Oh well, everyone is safe and that is what matters.

I'd still like to tget something to put over the top - eventually. I think we are going to look on craigslist and buy dog kennel fencing (one at a time as we can afford it.....that way it'll be too tall for them to fly over. The stuff we put up yesterday looks real redneck. Might as well have some duct tape on it too

Not that there's anything wrong with redneck.....I'm proud of my heritage.

I just like my stuff to look somewhat nice. Ya know what I mean?

Ummm how high? I have a rooster that flies to the rafters in my barn. The rafters are 10 foot off the ground. He won't sleep in the run or the coop, he sleeps in the rafters. I was sure he was using things in the barn to hitch himself up but nope.

I was in the barn the other evening and watched him take a running start and fly right up to the rafters!! I was amazed!

When a run is that big, I think its good to sink some cedar 4x4's towards the middle, to give a little support to whatever you put on top. You'd make them however high you wanted them.

Am I the only one who has chickens that suck at flying?

My EE got out - but I think I found where she got out and fixed it. We look so funny trying spy on our chickens - trying to find out how they are getting out. I told my husband we should get some sunglasses and trench coats.
