What type of waterer do you use?

I use horizontal nipples. While most use a 5 gallon bucket, I use an 11 gallon clear plastic tote with lid with the nipples. It gets very cold in NW Montana so I also add a stock tank deicer to the tote to keep the water thawed. It has stayed thawed down to the -22 we got last year. The waterer is kept outside in the run.

The best watering system is the one that allows you to keep your birds in water while making the work as easy as possible for yourself. I am going on 68 in a month. Am afraid of falling in the icy snow and breaking something. I do not make any more trips than necessary out to the coop. Normally I get the young man across the street to tend to the feeding and watering once a week. My water and food will last at least that long. However, occasionally in the winter I have to do the chickens myself. The food is kept in a trash can just outside the door of the run. I am fortunate to have the heated well house with a faucet inside close to the coop so can use a hose year round, even when it is below 0.

Do you have a picture of your set up, are you heating the water or just the circulation?

The horizontal nipples on a bucket can sit on the ground or on a cinder block easy, but you do not want to use ACV with them. ACV can damage the metal over time.

I just thought I'd mention that you can use ACV with the Columbus Aqua brand nipples, as the pins are made with premium stainless steel

Also- OP- horizontal nipples with a submersible heater will solve all of your problems! We live in Colorado where it regularly gets cold (in the negatives). A 5 gallon bucket and 80 watt heater works great. The larger the container, the higher wattage heater you'll need.

Stainless steel will corrode if pH is below ~3.5, which equates to a concentration of approximately 2 tablespoons per gallon. If you're using LESS than that, yes your premium stainless steel MIGHT be fine - but why risk it for minimal benefit?

Just the circulation keeps it from freezing however the coop is next to the house so it gets some heat from that. @blackdog043
