so a friend of mine went to a huge mardi gras party on Tuesday. They where stuck with a TON of leftover boiled crawdads, anouillle, potatoes, and corn cob pieces. Yesterday they informed me they where sick of eating the leftover mudbugs and brings me a whole 24" X 36" x4" tub of them. I ate my fill of them and my girls got the rest.

I was a little worried they where a bit too spicy for them, and they seemed apprehensive about it for a while but after each hen had an opportunity to come by for a sample taste, it was like a piranha attack! there where crawfish bits flying everywhere! I wish I had video taped it!

I wanna be your chickens--haven't had those in years!

Mine are getting: a cup or so of leftover sticky rice, chopped up apple core and celery ends from the kids snack yesterday, two boiled eggs that dh didn't eat and forgot to take out of his lunch box, and the chicken carcass from dinner last night.

I doubt that the spice in the crawdad mixture would harm your hens. I remember reading here on BYC forum some recommendations to increase egg laying: adding red pepper to the feed was one suggestion. Our hens had steak, baked potato, and salad this morning from our "doggy bag" take home from a restaurant last night. I'm sure the staff thought it strange when we piled all our leftovers together in one large take home container, but we no longer worry about image. We bought the food and make use of all, what we eat as well as the leftovers. ~G

Same here..no more leftovers in our frig either!

I'm rediculous...I've been putting a little water in a pot in the morning and heating up their left overs for them...oh and hot water too to melt the ice buckets! Seems to be working...they've been laying like gangbusters all winter...I guess there's something to keeping their insides warm! Mostly mine get alot of PB sandwhich leftovers(I soak all my bread in warm or hot water before giving it to them)...today they got some bean burger leftovers and protein pasta and a little bit of scrambled eggs!!! They act like they've never eaten before...everytime they see me with the pot!

Spoiled Rotten & loving it! Blessings, Keri

ran out of feed a day before I could get to the feed mill, so last night they had a combo of brown rice, oatmeal, applesauce, green beans and grapes. They devoured it. One time I threw them a leftover chicken after picked off for supper, my son was amazed that within 2 days there was no sign that they had ever had one. GONE.
