Do you think four males would be too many for 30 females? Right now I have 30 females and 3 males.
Also what book do you recommend to learn this?

  6. Ooooo! That gives me ideas!! I just acquired a handsome breeding pair of Black Copper Marans and I was disappointed that I was only able to get one hen, but now I'm thinking that I could put my Olive Egger and Amauracana girls in with the Marans rooster and their offspring would lay darker olive eggs and more Olive Eggers! :ya

Oh, well I have several books. The one I spoke of earlier is "Exhibition Poultry" by David Scrivener. I also have "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow, which I use a lot, too. L

A good ratio isn't set in stone. For heavy breeds 1:8 is optimum, and 1:12 is max

For light breeds like Leghorns, it's 1:12 and 1:20

Just out of curiosity, do you plan to make separate pens or chop heads?

I think I love you. :love

I also think it may be my life's goal to breed for that far right shamrock-colored egg in the last row.:fl
