What was that sound?

It sounded like my chickens were screaming. Everyone in my house basically woke up and we all went out to check on the ladies. The chickens were fine but we kept hearing this awful cry almost. I live in central Maryland. There was a fox around a month ago along with and owl. We’ve not seen them recently. Any one have a clue what this could be?

Was the cry you were hearing coming from the chickens or a predator?

My first thought after reading your post is that a fox caught a rabbit somewhere. Rabbits scream like that when caught by a predator.

Look up the barn owl... they don’t have a typical woo sound; they scream like a person - it’s very unsettling. They are short screams that last about 3 seconds, enough to scare the bejeeeebus outta you.

Not sure if you have bobcats where you are from, but their cries sound like babies crying.

After listening to a few sounds I think it was a Fox. The barn owl sounds more high pitched so then I heard. I keep my eyes out for anything and I’ll try to record the sound next time.

If you have a game camera, you may be able to get a picture of whatever it is. I love my cameras. Good luck...

They can wake the dead....never forget the first one I heard.
Got to see it the next night, it was 50' from back of house on a big log.
My spotlight didn't faze it one bit and I got to see it vocalize several times before it took off.
